Why printed images matter Back in the ’90s I remember walking back to our trade show booth behind two people from a neighbouring stand. They were into IT. As they approached our booth I heard one say to the other, “I feel sorry for these guys. How long can they last in the modern world?” It’s so long ago I feel like they must have been visionaries — how did they know To View More >>

This weeks 'Share of the Week' goes to James Kelly Photography, based in the UK, who shared a great Queensberry flushmount album video and words about the importance of printing. Thanks for sharing, James. There’s a wee thank you on its way to you. "Let's talk about the digital files. "The truth is, the high-resolution digital files should not be at the top of your priorities of the final product when deciding on a wedding package/photographer it should be the album. Yes by having those files, you will be able to print them as you please and make a wedding book etc but To View More >>

Heather is proud of our press books. Here she explains why… How 95% of the press/photobook market works First you buy a very expensive machine. Then you focus on how fast you can run it, how cheaply you can buy your paper, and how quickly you can bind and make covers. You print 4-colour. Above all else you focus on FEEDING THE MACHINE. You sell your product as cheaply as you can - and certainly not just to professional photographers. You don’t worry too much about colour because your customers don’t expect a lot, and probably think that a bad result is their own fault anyway. To View More >>

Picture this! Some magic lighting, a beautiful bride and a handsome groom, standing staring emotionlessly at a camera. In ten years time what does this picture say about the happily in love couple on the happiest day of their lives? Actually what it says about them now is that they appreciate a current and popular expression of fashionable imagery. It isn't possible for them to say that they didn't know it was happening. Because something is fashionable doesn't make it good, or that it suits the outcome. We go out of our way to keep up with current trends, sometimes losing sight of what we are To View More >>

Well in excess of 2000 aftershocks later, the region I live in still has no idea when the shaking will stop. [caption id="attachment_9611" align="alignnone" width="333" caption="I arrived at the bride's mum's house, and they had a big crack in their drive that went ..."][/caption] On September 4, 2010, Christchurch (New Zealand) was rudely awoken (4:35am) by a rather large Earthquake (magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale). The energy released in that one shake is still way in excess of the sum of the energy released by all of the aftershocks, even though many have been over 4 and several To View More >>
I recently held a small workshop in the UK at the studio of Zoe Richards just out of Liverpool. It was intimate (there were only nine of us). We discussed album design and particularly spoke about the Musée. One of the ideas of that album is to create a feeling of intimacy. The resounding lesson from our discussion was about that and simplicity. Too often people cram images into albums to the point where there is no room to rest your eyes. The Musée design uses space to reinforce the luxury and quality feel of the product. There is something exciting about an intimate moment in a cupboard but To View More >>

We asked one of our print consultants about their commitment to sustainability a few days ago, and they were rather puzzled by the question. "But of course," they said. "It goes without saying doesn't it? Sustainable plantation paper ... ECF processing ... vegetable-based inks. We don't beat the drum about it, that's just the way it is these days." We feel the same way, but we're regularly asked the same question, so here's Queensberry's philosophy on the environment and sustainability... Humanity's biggest impact on the environment is generally from our daily practices. That coffee is gone in To View More >>
If you're finding this year tough, and you've said, or thought, what's wrong, I'm not doing anything different... right there may be your problem. Just as things changed when you switched from film to digital, or PC to Mac, or Nikon to Canon, things have changed with the end of the party economy... Have you heard how much the Las Vegas convention industry is suffering because it's not a good look for corporations to go there to "party" when times are tough? This is probably not the best time to be selling party souvenirs. Your work needs to be significant, worthwhile, to survive the end of the To View More >>
In their vows they used the word 'forever', or possibly 'until death us do part'. Of course they weren't talking about their wedding album. But as a reflection of that fabulous day, where they promised everything to each other, you would surely expect their album to align with their personal version of 'forever'. We sell this idea to our clients. We tell them that this is why we use Queensberry. Longevity is a double edged sword. Longevity refers to the physical life of the album and its contents. It also refers to the enduring nature of the design and imagery. Read as 'simple is good'. We talk To View More >>
