Free_Design_and_CC Today we're announcing free album design and free standard colour correction on all our professional albums - Flushmount, Overlay Matted, Classic Matted and Duo. Here's why... When we're discussing how we can improve our products and services, we ask ourselves three questions: Can we make it fun? Will it save you time? Will it make you money? This time we're aiming for all three :) Many of our customers pay us to colour correct their images. Many pay us to design their albums as well. Many more wish they could afford to do the same. ALL OF YOU are going to enjoy one of two things. A fresh chance to get your lives back, or a major price reduction. The rest of our customers are going to enjoy a new choice! Are you editing images and designing albums because it adds value and you enjoy it, or because you feel you have no choice? How significant is this? Until today, depending on where you're located and the albums you're buying, colour correction and album design could add 25%, 30%, 40%, even 50% to the cost of our albums. In conjunction with our first price increase in years we're going to build those services into the price of the album itself. A 7.5% increase for Duos and Classics, 9.5% for our Flushmount and Overlay Matted ranges. Musée, which already includes free design and colour correction, will stay the same. How can we do this? You probably remember our recent free design/free colour correction promotion. That was a test to answer two questions: would people be interested, and could we cope? Both answers came back "yes". Have we gone to the Dark Side and finally succumbed to cheap digital tricks, automated colour adjustments and instant page layouts? No. Every image and every page will be worked by hand, same as it ever was. But we want to change the conversation. Instead of spending our time working through colour management issues and explaining Photojunction, we want to talk to you about the love we share for beautiful photography, beautifully presented. Instead of spending our time talking about post-production work that you really don't want to do, we're inviting you to leave it to us. We hope your own thinking and your conversations with clients will change too. To be about the album itself - not about the work involved, or the time you don't have. Instead we hope you will ask people a very simple question... Would you like one of these beautiful albums? Get them to say yes, choose the images, and let us take it from there. Because, as the responses to our current survey clearly show, every time you don't sell an album you're leaving money on the table. As always, a special offer! Our new prices will take effect after our end-of-year cut-off date (10 November). Until then, when the Workspace infrastructure is upgraded for the new service, we're reintroducing our recent free design / free colour correction special. Two conditions apply: you must send us JPGs (not PSDs) and order using the Export, Print and Assemble service or through Workspace. If you do want to send PSDs the new Premium Colour Correction Service will be applied, which will still be about 50% cheaper than the current pricing. Get in quick! A few people have given similar feedback over on our Facebook post, so I've given a more complete explanation there https://www.facebook.com/queensberryalbums/posts/10151869845098536 I guess the simple explanation is that after 4 years of holding our prices and even reducing them, and with sustained pressure on our own costs, we needed have a price increase anyway if we are to remain sustainable and not need to compromise quality and service. The new service was a way of passing one our own internal efficiency gains and help reduce the workload so many photographers suffer from. We don't however want to cause any short/medium term issues for our clients so I can get Katrina to contact you if your like to see if there some way we can ease the pain. All the best Stephen

I'm actually quite disappointed in in reading this. Instead of fixing the huge number issues with photojunction you guys continue to push your clients into using your album design services. And now, for those that simply don't want to, we are now forced with a price increase for a service we won't be using. I've had to make some pretty tough choices regarding the albums I offer this week, I love Queensberry albums, my clients love them, but at the end of the day, that's just not enough to keep me here.

My clients love the 10x7 inch size and often ask about the minis I would say 2 per album I would be happier to pay a little more for these if they were an option

Just thought I'd put this out there - our clients LOVE the 10x7 album, but with no option for a miniature duplicate, pretty much all of them choose an album package from our other (lesser) supplier that do offer them. They (and ultimately Queensberry) are missing out. I had hopes on the announcement doing a little something for us little guys, but I feel slightly disappointed. But still, price increases and free design is all good.

Hi... we also love your albums, and thus far haven't used your design or editing services. Knowing how long it takes us to do these things to the standard we want, it must take up quite a lot of man (Person?) power, a cost which must be borne by someone. How many hours would you spend on an album if editing and designing it? I guess I am a little sketchy on potentially paying for these services as a built-in cost to an album when I may not actually use them. One question I have is around the design process. Are the albums designed and then submitted back to us for approval? How many back-and-forths can we have to get it looking just as we want? One thing we talk to our clients about when we first meet is the fact that the albums are customized, and we will share proofs with them until they are perfectly happy with it before submission for printing. I know a lot of photographers are perfectionist control freaks, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. By taking away this element of artistic control are you in fact alienating quite a large proportion of your customers? I know you've done your research, but I guess I am a little unsure of all this.

Perhaps, the offer is good for some other photographers but now for me. It's a pity that you raise the prices based on services, which I would prefer not to use. I like to design albums myself, select photos and tell the story. Moreover, I'm not sure that I can leave it for another person... Regarding colour correction, well, I do it anyway to present beautiful photos to clients, so I don't really see a point, sorry.

Thanks Milton, so pleased you like the change. We didn't like the double service ourselves, if only because it became so expensive. We get held to such a high standard, and the images we receive such a varied standard it was unworkable to just go design -> print. At the end of the day people expect us to see everything when designing. Our hope now is if we see it, we don't have to ask for extra money or least a minimal amount if we see issues. BTW have I ever said I love your avatar image? It's awesome; it makes you look so happy, and makes me want to be more like Milton :-)

Although we appreciate your desire to do your own design, the irony of your situation is the value behind todays announcement is to try get frustrating technology out of the way of the photography and beautiful books. I am saddened that you're having these problems with Photojunction, but can't really comment as I don't know the specifics of your situation. I do know however that people tend to fall into one of two groups. Those that love Photojunction and those that don't like it. I asked Pete to phone and see if he could help and I understand he has left a few messages. I would love it if you could either help him understand your situation or if I could call you to discuss. I'm the CEO of Queensberry and certainly will do all I can to resolve. We respect whatever is your final decision but for now really appreciate your support to date. Hi Jolly. We do hear this a bit. This one really needs us to put our thinking caps on. Starting with the problems first, our copy albums are (a) smaller replicas of bigger albums and that can be across many permutations of matted, flush mount etc. There can be a lot of labour in the conversion. (b) the copies and freight cost are subsidised by the bigger album and a 10x7 doesn't have much profit in it to carry the subsidy and (c) depending on the number of copies there are packaging issues, ie how many box sizes to carry, and then they travel as the much more expensive volumetric freight. We can do the smaller albums but due to the issues above they just tend to be a bit more expensive than "copies". To really solve your issue however, I guess the questions really are how popular do you think this would be, is this a once every so often issue or 20-30 times a year. Is this from matted or flush mount and do you know how many copies? I'd love to be able to do this for you, we just need to get some guidance :-)

Thanks for your reply Stephen. As a growing business we currently do about 15-20 wedding albums over a season, and 80-90% of clients opt for at least one additional miniature albums (often two). I can see how your costs and freight charges affect the price at which you can offer the replica albums...but why not raise an additional charge to cover these costs (and possibly then some!)? Can we as photographers not do the conversion ourselves through photojunction? We use matted albums and the only Queensberry "duplicate" option we currently have to offer is a press book (an upsell to the 10"x14" album - and therefore the mini replicas - is unrealistic in the region we are located), but this is such an inferior solution to give clients when a beautiful, quality product is potentially available. Our other suppliers have a two-tier system of prices where mini albums are concerned (a replica price, and a bespoke mini album price), and this really works for us even when one is more than twice the price of the other. I'm pretty sure if you sent out another questionnaire asking whether photographers would like to have the option of the smaller albums, at a premium, you'd get plenty of feedback to consider. I hope I've managed to reply helpfully.

Hi Stephen, It's really cool that you're concerned enough to be responding to these personally. I don't know how many albums we've ordered from you over the last seven years, but obviously we love them! We think you love us too as you used one of our albums to advertise on your recent Style Me Pretty promotion. As a photographer who has someone designing albums for us full time, the price increase with part of it being due to album design isn't that great for us. I know not all of the new price increase is going to design. Perhaps you could offer a 5% discount to people who are not using your color correction or free design service? Just a thought. Thanks!
