Welcome

This is the blog for professional photographers, and those who aspire to be. Our aim is to help professional photographers build long-term, sustainable careers.
When we arrived in San Francisco I was amazed by the number of homeless people on the streets. They weren't threatening, they were just there. Most people ignore them, and I did too. But not always. We’re just human, and my mind was not quietened by walking by. The guy on the tour bus warned us about “homeless scammers”. I talked about it with people in our study group, and with locals. Like it was their problem to fix. Silicon Valley is the seat of innovation in the world, with arguably some of the best design companies and schools, and the richest companies. What an audacious challenge to try to minimise, if not alleviate, poverty. Walking past a homeless person pretending they’re not there won't make homelessness go away. Giving something to them might not either but somehow it feels better. This morning I was getting ready to fly home, and writing up my notes to share when I get back to Queensberry. I had the thought that I was writing about generosity and gratitude, but part of me wasn't living up to how I want to be. I went out and bought a bunch of chocolate and muesli bars and walked around the streets, looking for people who I thought could do with a little treat in their day, a little sweetness. Everybody thanked me. Nobody asked for money. One man said bless your heart. That's what it's been about while we've been here. Sharing, giving, withholding judgement. I've  learnt so much. I go home grateful. Best, Heather PS I haven't shared this to impress anybody, just to encourage you to help people less fortunate than you. And yes, I understand the power of “incentives”. Yes, I know the States has a strong tradition of private philanthropy. But there are a lot of homeless here, and I need to look more closely at home.
