When you start designing an album, the first and most important decision you'll make is the “format”: the size and shape of the page. Constraints on album manufacturers, stockists and labs used to mean your choices were very limited, but that’s now history. We have many formats to choose from, large and small, vertical, horizontal and square. Personal taste, practical considerations and what your market is accustomed to should all play a part in your selection. This page deals with Feature Albums. Be sure to check out Demi albums, Self-mount Miniatures and the various other album styles featured under Accessories in this section of the website.
Learning about our formatsHow do you make sense of all this choice? - We've made it easy by naming our formats after their approximate size in inches. For example, a 12x12 is approximately 12 inches square (30x30cm). Scroll down for a list of available formats.
- As a rule of thumb, our larger formats (12x12 and above) are our best sellers and the most practical as wedding albums. That's because they have room for plenty of images. Smaller formats certainly have their appeal. They make excellent parent and portrait albums, although our experience is that high-end portrait photographers increasingly prefer a more spacious format.
- Without doubt the best way to experiment with the possibilities of each format is to design a few “virtual samples” in Photojunction.
- The easiest way to get started is to keep things simple, but you do have a lot more choice now. Previously you had to design your album around standard print sizes, but now you can design even matted albums with images of any size, and we can print it and cut the mats to suit. If we’re not printing for you, make sure your lab’s equipment can print the sizes you require.
Format listingThe following dimensions are in inches, and approximate only. Photojunction album planning software automatically outputs your print images to the correct size. If you’re not using Photojunction you MUST refer to our tables of dimensions to ensure your printing is correctly sized to fit the album - Large Vertical (18x12, 15x12 and 14x10)
- Large Horizontal (18x12, 15x12 and 14x10)
- Large Square (12x12 and 15x15)
- Large Top-opening (24x12)
For practical reasons, a number of restrictions apply to our smaller albums (scroll down for details). - Small Vertical (10x7, 7x5 and 5x4)
- Small Horizontal (10x7, 7x5 and 5x4)
- Small Square (9x9, 8x8 and 6x6)
Number of pagesYou can order our feature albums with up to 30 pages (60 sides). If it becomes necessary to create two volumes because you have exceeded the 30-page limit, we offer a 40% discount on the second cover. Price considerations
Larger albums certainly cost more, but this is less of an issue than you’d expect, simply because you can place so many more images on the pages of large-format albums. You may need to consider whether you charge for your work per image or per page (side or leaf). Minimal restrictions With very few exceptions you can order any cover material or colour, any page type or option, in any of the formats. The main exceptions are our more esoteric materials, such metals, that are not available in small formats. Binding Our feature albums are supplied with the leaves permanently bound into the cover of your choice using the best traditional practices. After manufacture you will not be able to add or remove pages, meaning that the album planning process must be complete when you order. Small album restrictions
- Our 8x8, 6x6, 7x5 and 5x4 formats are considered “accessory products” to which special conditions apply (they must be ordered with a 12x12 or larger feature album or freight charges will apply: these are detailed in your price list).
- We will ship 10x7s and 9x9s freight free if you order them separately, or apply a discount if they’re ordered with a 12x12 or larger feature album (detailed in your price list).
- The 10x7, 7x5, 6x6 and 5x4 formats are not supplied with presentation boxes; these formats are supplied in velvet bags at no extra cost.
- 7x5 and 5x4 albums are offered with digital pages only.
- Small format albums are not available in some cover materials (see your Price List for details).
