By shooting on film and scanning your negatives you get a low-cost, easy-to-understand entry into the digital world using your existing equipment.
Film processingWe offer substantial discounts on processing if you order first runs and/or scans at the same time. Our film processing has always been recognised for its professional quality. But producing the best possible results from film is dependent on many factors, the first being to ensure that the film is correctly exposed!
We maintain our processing machinery and chemistry to the highest quality standards to achieve the maximum optimum results. We constantly monitor the key variables in the film and paper processes. We use Dip and Dunk Film Processors for both colour and black and white film processing. The films pass through at least two washes to ensure that all chemical is washed from the film. To further increase film stability, the films pass through a stabiliser bath that ties up any un-used magenta couplers in the film. If left unstabilised, these dye-couplers can cause the film to discolour over time. The stabiliser also contains an anti-static solution that assists in eliminating static charge and prevents the films from attracting dust.
Once the films have been processed, they are placed onto a lightbox for assessment. The number of printable frames is counted and the studio is charged accordingly. It is here that any problems with the films are picked up - such as over/under exposure, fogging, lightleaks or blank film. We will notify you should these occur so that the problem can be corrected a quickly as possible and advise about correcting them where possible.
Film formatsWe process and print from 120, 220 and 35mm film formats. We can also print from large format 4”x5” as a digital print (after scanning).
C-41 negative filmThis includes all brands of colour print film as well as those black and white films that are manufactured to be processed in colour chemistry, such as Kodak T-Max CN 400. The lab uses Professional Kodak Flexicolor C-41 chemistry.
Black and white filmAll types of black and white film are compatible with Kodak T-Max RS chemistry. If you are bulk- loading your own black and white film, please inform us of the make and speed. Each black and white film has a different processing time, so this is very important.
Our Scanning ServicesScanning full rollsThis economical service allows you to adopt a digital workflow (shown in the graphic above) while still shooting on film. We can scan 35mm, 120 and 220 film. Full rolls are required or higher charges may apply.
We deliver your scans on CD. Full roll scans must be ordered at the time of processing, which is an extra charge.
All Queensberry scans are made from customised ICC profilesand converted to Adobe RGB (1998). Provided you have Photoshop set up correctly, you can use the profile to ensure that you edit your images on the basis of accurately interpreted colour values. Alternatively we can do further colour correction and retouching for you (Full Colour Service).
Select a scanning resolution to suit the print sizes to be made from them.Low-res scans are generally suitable for small prints up to 6x4 unless you crop the image significantly. Assuming that the image is not significantly cropped, medium-res scans are generally suitable for up to 25x20in prints. (Interpolation will occur at this size but results will generally be satisfactory in practice, although this is a matter of judgement on your part). High-res scans are also available. Proxy scans from full rolls
Proxy scans are suitable for screen display or projection and are good value because, as well as the low price proxy scan, we scan and retain 18MB files for subsequent printing. You face no further scanning charges unless you order very large prints (larger than 25x20 uncropped) and the scans will be retained for a minimum of three months before deletion.
Your order will be delivered on request as a Photojunction client file with images rotated ready to display.
You must not rotate, resize, crop or otherwise modify proxy images because, except for resolution, these must be identical in all respects to the print-res files from which your work will be printed. It is also essential that you do not rename the files!
Colour-correction and Digital ICEProof colour correction or Standard colour correction can be done economically on full roll scans. You may request your scans to be Proof colour-corrected or Standard colour-corrected for an additional charge. Click here for more about colour correction.
Scans (except from true black and white film) are automatically cleaned of dust imperfections using Digital ICE technology (equivalent to optical spotting). Although Digital ICE slows down the scanning process, we do not charge extra for this. However additional handwork may be necessary before outputting very large prints (normally larger than 25x20 – see Scanning Resolution, above).
For technical reasons scans from Black and white film cannot be “cleaned” with Digital ICE.
Want to retain your traditional film workflow? If you wish to retain a completely traditional workflow in your studio, ordering proxy scans in conjunction with digital first runs will enable you to access our digital print services and prices at low costs.
Scanning individual imagesScanning individual images is a more expensive process but enables you to access all our digital printing and art services from negatives, even if you maintain an optical workflow for the bulk of your work.
We can scan:- Colour or black and white negatives and transparencies
- 35mm, 120 and 4”x5” film formats
- Negatives mounted on Queensberry cropping masks
- We can also flatbed scan from prints up to 8x10in.
Scans will be supplied in Adobe RGB (1998). Provided you have Photoshop set up correctly, you can use the profile to ensure that you edit your images on the basis of accurately interpreted colour values.
You may also need to have occasional negatives rescanned that have already been scanned as full rolls. This is necessary if you intend to make very large prints (normally larger than 25x20 – see Scanning Resolution, above).
Digital ICE is not available with this service. |
