clean-green_istock_000001144968xsmallWe asked one of our print consultants about their commitment to sustainability a few days ago, and they were rather puzzled by the question. “But of course,” they said. “It goes without saying doesn’t it?  Sustainable plantation paper … ECF processing … vegetable-based inks. We don’t beat the drum about it, that’s just the way it is these days.” We feel the same way, but we’re regularly asked the same question, so here’s Queensberry’s philosophy on the environment and sustainability…

Humanity’s biggest impact on the environment is generally from our daily practices.

That coffee is gone in five or ten minutes, for example, but the disposable cup lid lasts for generations.

Same with sushi, salad, groceries, magazines – most of the products people buy day to day. Waste from products and their packaging vastly outlasts the products themselves. And the sheer volume of what we buy makes each seemingly trivial purchase overwhelming in its impact.

At Queensberry our albums last for generations, not the packaging we deliver them in.

We ship our products with recycled/recyclable cartons and biodegradable plant-based pellets that can be reused or composted, and break down within minutes when wet.

To ensure the longevity of the albums themselves our policy is to use only the best time-honoured materials and hand binding processes, and our sustainability policies reflect that mindset.

Because our products are handmade, our bindery consumes little energy compared with intensive machinery-based operations, and offers rewarding jobs to a skilled team.

To reduce both our costs and environmental impact we closely monitor all production inputs, and recycle all recyclable waste, for example the silver from our Lab, and paper and card from the Bindery.

We avoid the use of toxins or heavy metals in the production of our albums. For example we selected our new micro leathers not only for their beauty and durability but also for the environmentally responsible policies of their manufacturer, with no heavy metals, formaldehydes etc used in their production.

In general we maintain “narrow and deep” relationships with suppliers, with a strong focus on quality, dependability and sustainability – policies that reflect our own. For example our card stock is specially made for us by a mill that must maintain the highest possible environmental standards simply because it adjoins England’s Lake District National Park, and has done since 1845.

To ship our albums we use German logistics company DHL, which is committed to improving its carbon efficiency by 30% by 2020 (10% by 2012). Like all freight, shipping our albums has an environmental impact. But, as we mentioned earlier, the impact of freighting an album intended to last for generations is minimal in a world where it is everyday practice to ship food and flowers around the globe and forget the rhythm of the seasons.

Finally, we are proudly based in New Zealand, where most energy comes from renewable resources, our workplace and environmental practices are carefully regulated and our clean, green image is a source of national pride.

Of course there is always room for improvement. This year we will be reviewing our own in-house practices as well as investigating the feasibility of a surface shipping and carbon offset program as an option for our clients.

  • You probably know we offer free protective coating on all Queensberry prints bound in Queensberry albums. It’s a fine, almost unnoticeable coating, that helps protect the images.

Prints in Duo albums are a bit more exposed than in matted books, so we’ve decided to coat all prints bound into Duo albums from now on. Free of charge, obviously.

As most of our clients already ask for their prints to be coated, this change will affect only a few clients.

The change will be reflected automatically in Photojunction’s smart filtering system in the next release, due out soon.

If you’d like more information or have any questions about our protective print coating, see our website or contact your Queensberry Account Manager.

    Cheers, Nigel

  • On a quiet day we get over 50,000 spam emails! One of us alone used to have 3-4000 to deal with. Lucky them.

Of course we screen spam in the normal way. In the past we even used to check to see if anything legitimate had been filtered out. It happens occasionally with all filtering systems. But the sheer flood of spam has made this impossible, and forced us to tighten our procedures.

If you suspect that your email is not getting through please phone (don’t email!) and let us know. We will put your email address on a “white list” to ensure we receive it in future.

  • DHL recently announced that they are discontinuing their US domestic service (U.S Express) to focus on their more profitable international services. However this change won’t affect our service to you. That’s because the only services affected are DHL shipments being sent from one US location to another.

We ship all our international orders direct from our bindery in New Zealand and DHL have assured us that this change won’t affect you or us in any way.

We’re working hard to get as many orders as we can dispatched before our December close-down. Rest assured that our expected delivery times are still accurate.

If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact us.

    Photography by David Jay

Seth Godin said recently, ‘If you want to build a brand for the ages, you need to stand for something today, and tomorrow, and every day.’

Among other things, we stand for quality, which is why the prints on our digital pages are split at the centreline, leaving a gap of about 2mm (about 1/16”). Some people might not like the look, but we can’t compromise products designed to last for generations.

Actually, as our website says, there are two reasons for this: more flexibility as to what equipment you can print on, and because the fold in the print almost invariably discolours and/or cracks.

We’ve seen enough “pink prints” to justify our position, and we don’t want to rely on photographic paper for the structural integrity of our books.

    We hope you understand.

    Cheers, Ian

  • What if you want to export layered PSDs so that you can edit them before sending them for Print-Ready service? Easy.

Just select QBY Print-Ready Service as your Lab Settings in Remix. This will allow you to save the files as PSDs that you can edit to your heart’s content. (Just don’t change image sizes, cropping, file names or specifications.)

Remember to flatten the layouts to JPEGs before you use the Order Wizard, as PSDs are not valid for Print-Ready service and there’d be an extra charge to flatten the files.

If you use our Print-Ready service as well as ordering Digital Copies from MATTED albums, it’s a little more complicated. We need layered files to create the copies, so you will need to leave your files as PSDs. When you export you’ll get the warning message above. Just click Yes to continue.

You’ve heard the saying about fitting square pegs in round holes? It can be very apt when it comes to choosing images for our Photo Front covers, especially the 1/4 Photo Front, as this screen shot from PJ Remix indicates – only a slice from the image will fit on the cover.

Although I’ve used Photojunction to illustrate the problem, it solves the problem as well. In Photojunction simply drag the image you want to use on to the cover layout, as in the screen shot. If it won’t fit the space you’ll soon know: you’ll need to choose a different cover style or find an image with a suitable aspect ratio.

Don’t forget the areas of the image shown semi-opaque will be concealed when they’re wrapped around the cover.

If you prefer to just send us an image instead of designing it yourself in Photojunction, make sure you choose something suitable. You’ll find a Guide to Photo Fronts here, and the actual dimensions here.

In future if we receive images for 1/4 Photo Front covers that don’t fit the space, to avoid extra design charges we’ll automatically change the cover to the 1/2 cover style (we’ll let you know, of course).

Finally, while we strongly recommend upgrading to PJ Remix, you can design album covers in Retro as well.
