What does a photographer do when their client wants something ‘a bit different’ for their wedding day? Ask Steve and Heidi of Aim 2 Please Photography. That’s exactly what they were asked by Katherine and Steve who were married at a stunning golf course resort north of Toronto on a warm spring day.

The bride and groom were married by the bride’s Grandparents, who are both members of the Salvation Army, then headed off to several locations around the resort where Steve and Heidi has set specific shots up. They posed with chairs in a grassy field, under a white canopy bed and set up a shoot with big lights outside the hotel after dark.

This wedding turned out to be a wedding of many firsts for Steve and Heidi. Their shooting format and album design included several elements they hadn’t experimented with before.

They used 16×9 cropping of their images, incorporated text into their album, and designed the album to specifically exploit and make use of the negative space on the page, to compliment the size manipulation and alignment of the images. Their choice of album size and format was also a first.

They chose a Queensberry 18×10 Horizontal Pagemount album with Grass Leather cover, Black mats and Silver pages – choosing the horizontal layout to parallel their 16×9 image cropping.

  • The image above shows what we call a split mat in a Duo album. The image extends from top to bottom (or side to side) of the mat, dividing it in two. How did I do it?

In this case I started in PJ Remix by adding a 10×7 aperture, then selecting Fill Page Height under Aperture Details on the Images tools palette. Look at it closely (as in the third image below) and you’ll see that the pagemount effect appears, just as it should, to the left and right of the image, but at the top and bottom the image extends right out to the edge of the page.

    I hope this helps.

    Smooth sailing, Ian

Laura and Marilyn of Natural Expressions recently won the New Hampshire PPA 2008 FujiFilm Masterpiece Award for Photographic Excellence with this beautiful album, which they called “a bright future”.

Winnie and Sean’s wedding, held at a beautiful country club in Massachusetts, was all about a colourful palette, so a colourful album was only appropriate.

Laura and Marilyn design a 10×7 Pagemount feature album with a Teal Leather Photo Front cover – Teal Leather chosen to complement one of the couple’s favourite portraits.

Inside, Ivory mats and a unique combination of coloured pages brought the album to life. Pink pages were used to frame colour images, while more subtle Ivory pages complemented the black and white images.

Laura and Marilyn said, “We wanted to stick with a traditional matted album but take a modern approach to the design. This album is a great example of the flexibility that Queensberry offers photographers.”

Congratulations Laura and Marilyn on your outstanding award win. We’re sure a bright future awaits.

Time and time again we see albums pass through our Bindery in which the photographer has reflected the stylistic theme of the wedding in the book itself. Last week we featured an album with an autumnal harvest theme. This album uses our Pagemount page system to very different effect.

What caught our eye in Scott and Priscilla’s case was the stylish simplicity of their red and white theme, and how well Matt and Enna of Grazier Photography had captured and reflected the details in a stunning album.

The red highlights around the prints are created by trimming them to reveal the red page behind the ivory mat. Because the pages were supplied without edging and corners, the same red highlight is carried through to the edge of the pages.

Scott and Priscilla’s red theme appears throughout the album but it’s possible to add a non-standard feature colour on selected pages only.

The 12×12 Photofront album was printed and assembled by Queensberry.

It seems a long way from Brian Dorsey‘s TriBeCa studio to a pumpkin field in New Jersey, but then his clients have commissioned him for events everywhere from Anguilla to Acapulco, and Quebec to Rio.

What caught our eye about this very striking album was how Brian had reflected his client’s tastes in it. Cindy and Eric were married in October, and the bride’s favourite colour is orange – so think Halloween and harvest time, pumpkins, trees changing colour with the Fall… and all matched harmoniously with the striking autumnal cover image, the matching leather binding, the chocolate-on-ivory pagemounts.

The ceremony took place in the couple’s local church in New Jersey. The bride’s mother had worked for years with a local farmer who gave them access to his grounds for photography. A special hay ride carried the bridal party to the shoot in the pumpkin patch.

Oh, and the bride is a candy fiend! So her theme was candy. She made the lollipop tree centrepieces herself, and dessert was a candy bar! We think it’s great that the personal touches and special moments of “our day” can reflect truthfully who we are.

This impeccably shot and designed album nearly got away from us. We didn’t photograph it before we shipped it, and we were too late contacting the studio before they sent it to their clients!

But it’s too beautiful not to show you as much as we can, which fortunately includes a slide show of the album. We love its natural, restrained good taste – professional wedding photography at its best, and typical of the consistently good work Geoff White sends us.

Liz and Adam choose Meadowood, St. Helena, in California’s wine country as the location for their destination wedding on May 19th last year. They wanted a simple, contemporary celebration for friends and family, most of whom had very busy schedules in Washington DC.

After hiring designer Alicia Falango to design the wedding and coordinate the details, they were referred to one of our San Francisco clients, Geoff White Photography, known for their contemporary, clean images with vibrant color.

Together, Liz and Alicia designed the wedding around the idea of relaxed elegance, with a modern, clean feel to the design. Working with a natural palette of chocolate brown and ivory, Liz chose Calla Lilies for her bouquet. The ceremony took place on the lawn, followed by a cocktail hour. Guests relaxed in the lounge area and dined under the stars before moving inside for dancing and desserts.

Liz and Adam chose a 14×10 vertical format pagemount album in iron leather with ivory mats on white-edged ivory pages; assembled at Queensberry from the studio’s own prints. Click here for a slide show of the album.
