Paul Stobbe’s clients know him for powerful canvas wall portraits, (often set in the amazing scenery of Vancouver Island) that become showpieces in his client’s homes. They know him too for remarkable wedding albums that utilise every “weapon” in the Queensberry matted-album armoury and are filled with images that are a mixture of the “directed” and photojournalistic approaches. His peers know him for his impressive print salon results, and client sales that set a benchmark for value. Queensberry knows him for the way his albums take full advantage of what we can do when it comes to creative album production. And like everyone else we know him as a terrific guy (the X-factor never mentioned at seminars), engaging and generous with his time.A resident of Campbell River, a small town on Vancouver Island, Paul received his early training in New Zealand, at Peter and Margharita Straw’s Beverley Studios (Marg is the current president of NZIPP). There he set the highest standards for his work - and learnt to start his emails to us with “G’Day!” Before opening his own studio back in Canada he worked for Don MacGregor and consolidated his understanding of photography as a creative and business enterprise. He’s generous with his gratitude to both studios. They taught him among much else that photographers don’t need to be starving artists.

His images are consistently accepted into the Canadian and American Travelling Loan Collections and he’s represented many times in Canada’s Museum of National Archives as well as at Walt Disney World’s prestigious Epcot Center in Florida. At twenty six Paul was the youngest person ever to receive Canada’s Photographer of the Year Award. Twice honoured with two more Photographer of the Year Awards from the Professional Photographers of British Columbia, over recent years Paul has concentrated his time and energy on his and Sandi’s young family, his growing business, and developing his target market, with whom he enjoys friendly, respectful and ongoing relationships that are a major factor in his success. Since becoming a Queensberry client Paul has been a generous supporter of us at North American trade shows, and we’ve sponsored him at occasional seminar engagements. He’s also an active user and contributor of feedback and ideas to Photojunction. |
