The Queensberry Blog

Nigel Hicks

I'm Nigel. A twenty-something year old with a new wife (my first) and a red Vespa. I'm into Marketing and that's mostly what I spend my time doing here at Queensberry. Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Webinars, newsletters, interviews, PR and networking... I especially love the online stuff. Other than that, give me a ball, a movie, a book, or my iPod and I'll probably ignore you. One day I'll have two dogs (big ones) a couple of kids and own a coffee shop. Maybe. I'm pedantic, tallish, a middle child and some people think I'm metro-sexual. I'm pleased to meet you and I hope we can connect.

Bride and groom Suganiya and Brahan married in full traditional Sri Lankan Hindu wedding style in early September this year.

Haran of Haran Photography traveled from his base in Wellington, New Zealand, to Melbourne to photograph the event. He says it was the longest wedding he’s ever photographed (two days), but it was also his most favoured.

A day full of colours, meaningful religious rituals, and decorative features made for some stunning images, and a beautiful album…

Diana and Elson’s small Los Angeles wedding in June this year was followed by a much larger celebration with friends and family back in their home town of Toronto, Canada.

Mango Studios was there to capture the events in Canada and says, “It was a day of variety. We started the day at the Gladstone Hotel, headed over to the Evergreen Brickworks for a tandem bike ride, and then flew over to Archeo in Toronto’s downtown distillery district for lunch.”

Mango Studios says the main focus of the day were the details and decor, most of which Diana made herself.

Here’s their 14×10 Queensberry album.

Dionne and Mark married on 25 April 2010 at the Stones of the Yarra Valley vineyard in Victoria, Australia.

Theo of Loco Photography was their photographer and used the venue’s rustic features and buildings to create some beautiful imagery of the day.

He designed the couple a wide format 18×10 Duo – his first ever Queensberry album which he’ll be reordering (with a few alterations) as a studio sample.

Enjoy…

Audrey and Xue (Lee) headed home to Taiwan to get married, but approached UK husband and wife photography team Carol and Nicholas Frost (Nicholas Frost Photography) to create something special in and around their current home in Aberdeen, Scotland, on their return.

They chose to shoot at various locations around North East Scotland including Castle Fraser, Fyvie Castle, Balmedie Beach and Soul Casino – the idea to really capture the couple’s personalities.

Nicholas says that the couple fell in love with their 10×7 Queensberry art album studio samples and commissioned the same for themselves.

Kayla and I married last December out in the notoriously wet Waitakere Ranges, at a venue called Cassels. You can read more about the day here.

The day before, bad weather was forecast. Not good. So I met up with our photographer Johannes van Kan to discuss our options. Options governed by what the weather would decide to do, and that would ultimately determine the format of album we went with.

If it rained we’d focus on portrait shots around the venue, more suited to a smaller, squarer album. Sunny, and we’d head to the beach and get some nice panoramic shots and go with a wide format album like an 18×10.

As it turned out, the weather played ball and we headed down to the beach on a blustery Saturday afternoon. 18×10 it was.

Here are a few spreads of our album…

Christina and Jesse’s album, by 2010 New Zealand photographer of the year Tony Carter, has been on lock-down for the past few months while it was entered into the recent NZIPP Iris Awards.

It emerged not long ago sporting a Bronze for the Wedding album category; just one of the awards Tony picked up.

Christina and Jesse married in late January at Waiaua Estate, North Taranaki, New Zealand, and went for a wide format 18×10 Duo album…

Tony walked away with New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year for the fifth time at the Iris Awards and was also named NZIPP’s first ever Grand Master. He entered twice in the wedding album category. His other entry scored Silver.

Justine Ungaro has just published a stack of images of her first Musée album on her blog and agreed to let us feature them here too. A beautiful wedding. Beautiful album. And beautiful bride… You may recognise her as former American Idol judge, Kara Dio Guardi ;)

Here’s what Justine had to say about Queensberry and her first Musée…

I discovered Queensberry albums way back in 2003, my first year at WPPI and have been using them ever since. Queensberry is based in New Zealand and their attention to detail and level of craftsmanship of their albums is always notable.

However, in 2010 they really managed to outdo themselves when they unveiled a brand new line of albums which they call Musee. I was absolutely blown away by how exquisite these albums are, they are sort of reminiscent of a Gutenberg Bible or some other ancient, priceless book. The first truly couture wedding album I’ve ever seen.

Now these albums aren’t for everyone…but I knew they would speak very clearly to certain people. This is the album I plan to create to house my own wedding images…when I eventually get around to it (sorry honey, I promise).

But I knew exactly who would be my first guinea pig, my friends & clients Kara and Mike whose wedding I photographed in Prospect Harbor, Maine last July. I knew they would trust me to create for them something truly beautiful and Mike decided to commission the wedding album as a gift for Kara on their first anniversary.

I have since visited the album at their home and it makes me so happy to see it proudly displayed in a place of honor. Something to be handled and enjoyed regularly, not hidden away on a bookshelf somewhere. Something that will last for generations, that will be passed down and only get more beautiful with age. Something I had to share with all of you here.

Thanks for letting us share Justine!

Determined to not let the rain spoil their day, Louise and Phil made the most of their personal wedding ceremony and travel themed reception at Packington Moor Farm, Staffordshire, UK.

Their photographer Claire Evans says, “Louise came prepared to brave the weather with a pretty pair of red and white spotted wellies, her bridesmaid had purple ones, and even Phil had his brand new pair to wear if needed!”

Luckily a break in the weather later in the day, allowed them to venture out into the surrounding countryside for some bridal photos… and make good use of those wellies!

Louise and Phil chose a 14×10 silk covered Duo album…

What made this wedding extra special for US photographer Andy Donnan was that it was the wedding of his grandmother – aged 83.

Ruth and Jerry wanted to keep things simple and low-key, and other than the Pastor, Andy and his girlfriend were the only guests present.

Andy says, “My grandmother raised me since I was a baby. Effectively, she is whom I call mum and grandma. I love her and am forever thankful.

“It was so great to spend a couple of hours photographing for her and Jerry (and for the rest of our families). July is the busiest time of the year for me, so to have the free-time to witness and record such a wedding is such a blessing. ”

Here’s their beautiful 10×7 album including several images of the couple viewing their album for the first time…
